Extracurricular Activities

From athletics to music and art, the boys and girls at Kailash Home are involved in a variety of activities apart from their compulsory schoolwork. Monthly birthday parties, movie nights and outings in and around Kathmandu provide fun and bonding opportunities for all children, regardless of age.

athletics

Kailash boys and girls love to run! And we encourage them to take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way, from training at the Kailash Home or participating in local races, to being officially selected by Team Kailash to run the annual Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon. In addition to all this, the Kailash playground hosts all kinds of other sports competitions, such as football or basketball.

Music and Dance

As part of FKH’s commitment to maintaining the connection between the boys and girls of Kailash and their culture, dance and music, both traditional and contemporary, are taught to all ages, thus complementing what they are already learning at school For more information on cultural traditions in Kailash, visit the Cultural Heritage page.

Outings and Meetings

Located on the outskirts of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, Kailash Home is ideally located for day trips to both the city’s cultural sites and excursions to the country’s natural wonders. During weekends and school holidays, Kailash staff organize fun and educational outings. In addition, local and international visitors are welcomed to Kailash every year to conduct workshops and programs on different topics.

Photography and Media

Beginning in 2020, Kailash Home, in close collaboration with our US partners, the Himalayan Youth Foundation, will begin offering two new and exciting programs: a Marketing and Digital Media Internship for selected senior students and a photography seminar. As children come of age in an increasingly digital world, our boys and girls have an innate knowledge of all things technology, and these new programs will allow them to leverage those skills and expand their knowledge in a directed environment.

Art

Many of our boys and girls are talented in the artistic areas of painting and drawing, and these skills are nurtured both in their school programs and in life at Kailash Home. Many of our donors and sponsors have been the proud recipients of original artwork by Kailash artists, always using the money raised from the sale of these works to supplement extracurricular offerings each year.

Agriculture and Culinary Arts

The Kailash Home bakery has been a staple for years, and with the construction of a new kitchen in 2019, the culinary arts program is expanding even further. Under the supervision of Kailash staff, boys and girls can learn not only to cook, but also to prepare classic Nepali and international dishes using produce that has been grown in Kailash’s garden as part of the agriculture program.

Birthdays and Holidays

With 100 children plus staff, there are always birthdays to celebrate at Kailash Home. So a monthly birthday party is held at the Kailash Home! Major holidays (both Nepalese and Western) such as Holi or Christmas are also special occasions at Kailash, as are visits from donors and sponsors from all over, volunteers and visiting alumni. In short, there is always something worth celebrating at the Kailash Home!
